John never fails to surprise me. He has been doing this since 2000 with his vast encyclopedic knowledge and his wonderful production of calenders, quiz books, erudite books, articles, newsletters, journeys, lectures and what not.
Just when I had started thinking I had had enough of him, he sends me another beauty! This time a special on Mineral poisons!
What John has done this time is collect 12 mineral poisons and used the wonderful pictures for each month of next year's calender. Thus he has Stibnite for January, Cinnabar for February, Asbestos for March, Realgar for April, Galena for May, Boltwoodite for June, Azurite for July, Cinnabar for August, Pyromorphite for September, Orpiment for October, Silver on Arsenic for November and finally Uranophane for December!
Boltwoodite? Pyromorphite? Uranophane? Well, don't worry, John gives detailed descriptions of all for lesser beings like me. Boltwoodite is a rare uranium mineral. We are told that nearly all specimens come from Namibia. It is named after Bertram Boltwood, who was the first to date a rock by its U:Th ratio, in 1907. Most Uranium minerals are safe if handled infrequently, but they must not be ingested.
Pyromorphite is a minor ore of lead, where it occurs with more abundant lead minerals. You can read about Urophane and all other minerals in the calenders. And of course, the pictures are breathtaking. Above all, the usual encyclopedic collection of poison dates is still there. Quite significantly all dates are new, and almost none is repeated from last years' calenders. Did you know, for example, that on 18 April 1940, the former Welterweight champ "Kid McCoy" committed suicide from sleeping pills? I didn't know that. Well, you get this information inside the box for 18 April in this calender, so that when this month dawns next year (and the calender is on your office wall), you will know for sure. In fact you will know all important poison events that occurred in any year in history during any particular month. Almost all other boxes are full of similar astounding information!

John has been publishing these calenders since 1993 (There were no calenders in 1997 and 1999). He picks up one interesting theme each time he comes out with a calender, each month displaying a rare and impressive picture related to that theme. Thus you get to see twelve thematic pictures in each calender. You may want to click on the "Poisons on Stamps" calender below to read its review done in this electronic journal earlier.
