I have gone through the book Last Rites by Charles Patterson. This is the life story of a person, Thomas A. Reed III. This story is exactly the same story of a boy in my village. His father Motilal was a Hindu saint/Priest/Pundit (Pujari in a temple) The father wanted this boy to work with him and the boy was always reluctant. Many a time the boy was beaten badly when he did not co-operate with his father's daily ritual works. The boy struggled to get out of his father's influence on him. His father used to worry and ask all of us who was going to look after his temple and his puja paath (daily prayers, ceremonies and routine temple chores) after his death? Few years back his father, by then an old Baba ji died. His son is now working in India (Punjab) in a factory. The temple is being looked after by another person (Ramchalitar Pandit) and not his son.
I am amazed that Patterson wrote fiction which is so close to an actual story I am aware of. I wonder if he was inspired by a similar story closer to him. However I can not rate this story very high. It seemed like a very commonplace story to me.
