Every doctor has to face emergency situations while practicing medicine. Under these situations doctors have to make split second decisions regarding investigations to be carried out and interventions & medications to be used in managing the patient. Therefore correct knowledge about these aspects is essential for all physicians. The current publication aptly titled "Emergency Medicine" is an excellent attempt to fulfill this very need of doctors.
The contents of the book are presented in a clear and readable font printed on good quality paper and spread over 500 pages. The author, who has vast experience in teaching and practicing medicine and is the winner of various academic awards, has divided the book into 11 units containing 95 chapters. The various units included in the publication are Pulmonary medicine, Gastroenterology, Infections, Cardiology, Neurology, Hematology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Nephrology, Poisonings, Internal Medicine and Acid-base and Electrolyte disturbances. Nearly all the common and important emergency conditions that come under these headings have been covered in detail in the chapters under each unit.

Each morbid condition is presented in a step wise manner in a separate chapter beginning with the definition or concept of the morbid condition followed by its causes or differential diagnosis, symptoms and signs suggestive of the condition, lab investigations to be carried out for confirmation of the diagnosis and the treatment/management protocol to be followed for treating the condition. The information presented in text is supplemented by relevant photographs, ECG reproductions, tables and algorithms in form of flowcharts that help in understanding the diagnosis and management of various conditions.
A unique feature of the book is that at the beginning of each chapter a diagram or a flowchart or photographs depicting the pathogenesis or causes or presentation of the morbid condition or its differential diagnosis is given. This serves as a ready reckoner for the doctor who is consulting the book for a particular condition.

Although the book would serve as an excellent resource material for the doctor faced with an emergency situation few improvements would enhance the utility and quality of the book even further. These include greater clarity of the photographs and diagrams, better quality and if possible coloured reproduction of the ECG patterns, list of references that serve as the source of information that has been provided such as definition of the condition, treatment protocol etc. (provision of references would also provide the readers a list of sources that they could consult for detailed reading on the topic), an appendix of the drugs that are commonly used in the emergency room with their dosages. Also, if chapters that describe the approach that one should follow while managing a patient presenting with a condition that has varied differential diagnosis such as acute chest pain, acute abdominal pain, acute confusional state are included the value of the book would be further enhanced.
Overall, we would say that the book that covers all the major emergency conditions that a doctor would expect to face during his practice, describing each in detail right from its pathogenesis to its management, is an excellent resource material for all doctors and would definitely help them in their noble cause of saving life and serving mankind.
