The rather modest title understates the wide scope of this book. At first sight one might think that this is a standard text just on the histopathology of endocrine disorders. Indeed the preface, rather modestly, informs the reader that it "provides a broad overview of the major areas of Endocrine Pathology using the general approach practised by diagnostic pathologists".
The book covers more than that and includes methods in cellular and molecular biology, fine needle aspiration cytology of endocrine glands and surgical, medical and radiation treatment of endocrine disorders. The inclusion of chapters on the treatment of endocrine disorders in a book largely meant for diagnostic pathologists emphasise the importance of the broad perspective that pathologists should have when making tissue based diagnoses.
Advances in immunohistochemical and molecular techniques in the last two decades have significantly changed our understanding of endocrine disorders. This book is not a revision of a tired old book but an entirely new book written with considerable dynamism.
The book opens with a chapter on "Methods in Cellular and Molecular Pathology" which lays down the basis for the modern outlook on endocrine disorders. There then follows a systemic look at the different endocrine organs starting with the Hypothalamus and Neurohypophysis, through parathyroid, thyroid and adrenal and going on to include the Endocrine Ovaries, Endocrine Testis, Endocrine Pancreas and endocrine tumours of the gastro-intestinal tract.

There are chapters, which cover Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndromes and Neuroendocrine Differentiation Patterns in Various organs. These organs include lung, breast, skin and the urogenital tract.
The final chapter is on the "Future Directions in Endocrine Pathology".
The chapters on the endocrine organs vary in length and no doubt reflect our present knowledge of a particular organ. For example, the chapter on the pineal (chapter 6) runs to only twelve pages, whereas the two chapters on the thyroid gland (chapters 9 and 10) command fifty-seven pages.
This is a multi-author work with contributions from a staggering 54 authors including the editor! The contributors are drawn from no less than nine countries. The editor, Ricardo V. Lloyd, is from the Division of Anatomic Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and lists his interests as Endocrine Pathology and In-situ Hybridisation.
In spite of the large number of contributors the style is consistent and there is no doubt that the editor has done his work well in smoothing out the chapters. Each chapter carries an impressive list of references and contains helpful tables for quick reference to differential diagnoses, immunohistochemical profiles, and other helpful information.
This large format, hardback book is well printed and bound. It is illustrated throughout mostly in black and white but there are 12 pages of colour plates. Most of the illustrations are of course photomicrographs but there are a number of macrophotographs and diagrams. The quality of the photographs, and in particular the photomicrographs, is super and the print quality is excellent. This book is an ideal reference manual for all Histopathologist and not only for the specialist endocrine pathologists. Trainee pathologists would find it useful for their exams.
This definitely is a benchmark book on Endocrine Pathology.
