Plucked and Burned, written by Sylvia Tomlinson and published by Redbud Publishing, is termed a fictional work, but the research and sincerity that have been used in this book bring it as close as we can get to non-fiction. This quality makes me more comfortable with my first review of a fictional work. I wasn't able to turn the pages quick enough to satisfy my desire to get to the bottom of this story. Being involved with farming and ranching in Oklahoma I was amazed at the accounts Ms. Tomlinson gives about life on "the farm".
I was also amazed at the plight of the chicken farmer. The way the intergrator or company representative treats the farmers and laborers involved in chicken production is regrettable. This story tells of a family's attempt to keep their farm, raise the thousands of chickens that "Poultry Unlimited" demands, and try to maintain some amount of dignity.

Sylvia Tomlinson has a writing style that makes her prose interesting and entertaining. She takes the reader on a journey around the Oklahoma countryside through the eyes of "Doug Blackwelder". "Doug" is reluctantly attempting to help his fellow chicken producers to organize against the horrible treatment they are receiving from "Poultry Unlimited". "Doug" is also busy trying to uncover the mystery surrounding the death of one of his friends. His investigation leads the reader through mean turns and unexpected surprises.
The characters are well defined and very believable. It is easy to identify with these everyday characters and to become engrossed in their drama. In the end the author brings the different storylines together in a believable climax.
The only thing I did not like about this book was turning the last page and finding it had come to the end. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in great read and an intriguing plot.
