Humana Press has published a wonderful reference book for physicians and caregivers involved with terrorist attack response: Physician's Guide to Terrorist Attack. Part I introduces the reader to a history of terrorists' attacks around the world. The section then moves on to address preparedness and resources issues. The section ends with introductions into bioterrorism-related diseases and biological, chemical, nuclear, and radiological weapons.

Michael J. Roy then opens Part II, Biological Agents, of the book with his own chapter on anthrax. Thirteen different biological agents applicable to terrorist activity are covered. Each agent chapter discusses the disease etiology, pathology, differential diagnosis, and treatment modalities for its specific disease.

Part III is concerned with the chemical agents used in terrorist plots. It covers the symptoms and treatment for six categories of chemical agents and breaks each category down to individual entities.

...I would highly recommend this book for anyone who might be involved with emergency response to terrorist activities. It would make a quick reference for differential diagnosis and triage in a mass casualty situation. I really like the e-book form available, but would recommend some sort of multiple licensing to expand the usability of this feature...

Each chapter from Part I and II has one or more case vignettes to help introduce the reader to real life situations, treatment, and results.

The final section of the book, Part IV, describes radiation effects, explosives, and psychological impact of terrorist incidents. It ends with a chapter by Michael J. Roy with his final words on the subject of the physician's responsibilities in a terrorist response.

The book comes with a CD-ROM that can be used as an e-book or PDA reference. Also accompanying the book are detailed installation instructions. This allows you have this reference loaded and usable on your computer at a response site. The only thing I do not like about this arrangement is that it only allows one installation on a single computer with the existing license given with the book. If a computer goes down in an emergency situation and you lose the installed e-book you cannot use the existing CD-ROM to reload it on a replacement computer. In consulting with the publisher, Humana Press, I found that a new license code could be obtained for a reinstall in this type of emergency situation. This would have to be done during office hours which are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who might be involved with emergency response to terrorist activities. It would make a quick reference for differential diagnosis and triage in a mass casualty situation. I really like the e-book form available, but would recommend some sort of multiple licensing to expand the usability of this feature.
