Review of Radiology

This pocket book is mainly intended for post-graduate medical students to provide them with the knowledge not covered under graduation. The size of the 145 page book is wisely chosen because it can be easily carried around in a pocket and therefore can function as a study book to prepare for radiology exams as well as a reference guide during day-to-day work.

The book is divided into only four chapters. Unfortunately, this very course division and the lack of an index make the book less suitable for reference. It can take quite some time to find information on a specific topic.

The first chapter, General Radiology, starts with a technical description of acquisition techniques starting with the invention of the X-ray. Within these sections short statements are given concerning different technical topics. Sometimes confusing statements are entered in between. For example on page 5 in the section on advances on CT technology statements are given about the diagnosis of SAH. This should not be placed in the general radiology section.

The second chapter, Systemic Radiology, describes the evaluation based on the clinical question. Overall, this gives a good overview and figures clarify the text. Again finding something quickly is difficult because the lack of an index.
Review of Radiology, 2nd Edition by Sumer K Sethi
...mainly because of the extensive list of commonly asked questions, it is very suited for its intended purpose, which is providing post-graduate medical students with the knowledge that they need to be able to pass radiology exams...

Next in the third chapter, Radiotherapy (typing error on the contents page), radio therapeutic treatment is covered.

Finally, commonly asked questions and there answers are given in the fourth chapter.

The whole book uses telegraph style sentences which provides a very condense text with all important information, but does not provide easy reading and can sometimes be quite cryptically requiring to read a section a couple of times before the meaning is entirely clear. Appropriate use of subheadings would have increased readability significantly. Unfortunately, it is not very well suited as a reference book because of the missing index and subheadings. Concluding, the book under review the book is concise and complete although the layout could be improved. However, mainly because of the extensive list of commonly asked questions, it is very suited for its intended purpose, which is providing post-graduate medical students with the knowledge that they need to be able to pass radiology exams. When a basic knowledge of radiology is available I would suggest to start with the exam questions and only to read the pages referring to the wrongly answered questions (page numbers are included at the answers).
